Register a Domain Name
Introduction to Domain Names Your Domain Name will need to be unique and there are two parts. The first part is the name you give your website the Mid-Level Domain (MLD) and the Top-Level Domain (TLD). The MLD is the Great in Great.com. It can have upto 63 characters. Only letters, numbers, and hyphens are permitted; no underbars, exclamation marks, or periods. The TLD refers to the .com, .net, or .org of the web address. These are not case-sensitive. There are also country code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) such as .us for United States, .ca for Canada, or .fr for France. In most cases, you will need to reside in the particular country if you want to purchase a ccTLD. Choosing Your Business Domain Choosing a business domain name can be one of the most important parts of owning an online business. You will need to know your target audience. Most Internet users remember web sites by their Domain names. The domain name can affect the anchor text of inbound links and ranking in search engines.
You must Register your domain with an accredited domain registrar. You can only register and own a domain if no one else has it. When you are trying to register a domain sometimes it is already taken. This is why you have to get creative in choosing other variations of the name you want. Many Web Hosting companies provide a means of finding a unique domain name and will register if for you. I use 1and1.com. Return to Create a Web Site page |
